recently – Pala Vermentino from Sardinia. Vermentino is the aromatic white varietal found all over the eastern Mediterranean – from Provence in the south of France, Liguria in Italy & the Mediterranean islands Corsica & Sardinia.
Pala was founded in Sardinia, Italy, in 1950. Mario Pala is now the third-generation winemaker (with help of his wife Rita and the fourth-generation of the family represented by his sons!) Since 1950, the Pala family has been dedicated to producing wines that represent Sardinia’s extraordinary terroir with a healthy respect for the environment.
I Fiori originates from a single vineyard, Is Crabilis, that has a mix of clay & limestone soils at 750 feet above sea level. The combination of limestone soils & high elevation vineyards add tremendous lift & aromatic complexity – further enhanced by stainless steel fermentation & aging. The result is approachable, fresh & most importantly, delicious Vermentino with hints of limey citrus, white flowers & melon. Perfect as an aperitif or with seafood.
Ian D’Agata, esteemed Italian wine critic from Vinous, loves I Fiori too:
“Pungent floral notes on the nose are complemented by hints of menthol and vanilla. Flavors of stone and orchard fruit have a honeyed quality. Finishes medium-long and quite tannic.” 90+. Ian D’Agata, Vinous.
